These antlers and I have worked together. I imagine a scene and enjoy the rapid firing of scoping my collection of antlers trying to find the right one for what it is I see inside my imagination. These carvings are true one of a kinds that are created through immense channelled emotions and with no time limitations.

The Legacy

It's interesting how carvings come to be...

During a conversation with a friend of mine, he mentioned how nice it would be to leave something behind when he retired from the position as president he held at the North Central Guide Outfitters (NCGO). Something that would represent his contribution to the association, a legacy of sorts. To obtain one of my carvings to auction annually at their banquet was mentioned and left at that with no confirmation it would ever happen.

While alone, I pondered the idea and decided to take on the project unknowingly to my friend Bert. I wanted this carving to be like no other so I selected one of the largest shed moose antlers in my collection. Just the size would allow me to capture all that I had to portray from the following:

  1. the representation of a legacy
  2. incorporate the N.C.G.O
  3. incorporate Bert
  4. incorporate Mary-Jane, Bert's wife (sentimental value)

The principle layout, a man riding a horse leading a packhorse, is the actual logo of the British Columbia Guide Outfitters Association with one exception, I carved Bert's face on the man's head who's riding on the lead horse. 'Lobo Peak 47 miles' was carved into the signpost to represent two things: one, the name of Bert's guiding camp, and second, 47 miles representing the age of Mary-Jane at the time of this carving. (Sorry MJ, cats out of the bag)

The base I designed to accommodate a section of glass between the top and bottom slabs of wood. The glass is engraved with the North Central Guide Outfitters name; the logo of the British Columbia Guide Outfitter's Association, and the title of the carving, "The Legacy".

The carving was presented to the North Central Guide Outfitters at their 2005 Annual Fundraising Dinner Banquet.

The idea, to become an annually auctioned piece that the successful bidder takes ownership of the carving for one year and returns it for the following year's banquet to be re-auctioned. This will ensure Bert's contribution to the NCGO will live on.

All the best Bert... Your legacy has begun

Chain of Events

"Chain of Events" moose antler carving - click to view in more detail

Dimensions:
Approximately 31" x 14.5" x 18"

I acquired this set of antlers after meeting a gentleman in 2001. They were offered to me with the promise I would not turn around and sell them to an antler buyer.

When I got the antlers home, I imagined a scene almost immediately. As I sat down to carve, something didn’t seem right. The brow tine on the left antler had become a stumbling block. I put them aside and began other projects.

In 2004 the antlers were placed on my carving table again and I promised myself not to start anything else until I finished with them. Now all I needed was a vision that would tie the set together and incorporate the brow tine. Many hours were spent imagining different scenes. Finally, the brow tine gave it away. It would become the trunk of a tree stretching upwards, branching out to offer space for a nest. Now it came time to test myself and offer a story displaying movement. These are two objectives I try to capture in my carvings now a-days. This is what happened.

You may be wondering about the title. It came after the carving was complete. I reflected on what chain of events brought this magnificent treasure into my hands. To understand, here are just a few points from a much larger picture.

  • This moose was born approx. 6 years before I came to Prince George.
  • I had only started drawing two years earlier
  • Tom harvested this moose 2 years before I moved here
  • 11 years pass
  • Tom and I meet in a line where I enter my first carving into competition
  • 4 years pass
  • “Chain of Events” is completed and to go where from here?

The “Chain of Events” continue…

Dimensions:
Approximately 20" x 16" x 8"
SOLD

Although I haven't taken the opportunity to visit Lobo Peak's main cabin in person, I now feel as though I have. Carving this one of a kind for Bert Fillion (one of the guides and owners) I imagined myself sitting with "the guys" sharing their day's adventures on the quest for a successful hunt. Oh the stories Bert has to tell, and if only the walls of this cabin could speak!

Lobo Peak Guide / Outfitters operated by Bert Fillion and Gerald Thompson, both twenty-year veterans of the woods, welcome you to their main camp. Offering some of the best guiding, they're located in central British Columbia giving you the opportunity to hunt some of BC's select terrain. If you would like more information about Lobo Peak Guide / Outfitters please contact Bert or Gerald at Lobopeak1@aol.com or lobo_peak@mag-net.com. Tel: 250-998-4618.

Happy hunting everyone

Artist's note:
I continue to strive for ultimate detail; hence the two moose hanging from the game pole to the right of the cabin. Looks like someone had a good days hunt. I always enjoy the challenge to test my skills at carving. If you're looking for that one of kind for that special place in your lodge, cabin, home or retreat then I look forward to hearing from you.
